- Digital Temperature Heat Gun
- Clear Plastic or Glass Ornaments
There's nothing better than making a handmade gift during the holiday season to give to a family member or loved one. These special items are things that people cherish for years to come. One great, child-friendly project that you can create this year are crayon ornaments! This is a simple project that you can complete in a single afternoon with your children. They'd make the perfect gift to give to a grandparent, or you can hang them on your own holiday tree!
Start by gathering your materials. You'll need the Digital Temperature Heat Gun, clear plastic or glass ornaments, crayons, scissors, and ribbon to hang the ornaments from. Make sure that you purchase clear ornaments that have a removable top.
Remove the paper from your crayons, and then use the edge of your scissors to shave off bits of the crayon. This step should be done by parents to avoid injury, unless you have child-safe scissors. Make a small pile of shavings for each color you'd like to use in your ornament.
Adult Tip: To easily remove the paper on the crayon, you can soak the crayons in warm water for a couple of minutes, or cut the paper off with an X-Acto knife.
Next, take the tops off of your ornament, and pinch small amounts of crayon shavings into the opening. The more shavings you add, the more the ornaments will be covered inside!
Turn on your Digital Temperature Heat Gun, and set the temperature to 160 degrees. This temperature is warm enough to melt the crayon shavings, and cool enough to hold above the heat comfortably (still exercise caution when using with your children).
The heat gun has a flat back, allowing you to set it upright and hold the ornament above the heat. This tool can be used for a wide variety of projects around your home such as removing paint or varnish, embossing, distressing, and more! It has a heat range of 120 to 1020 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hold your ornament a couple of inches away from the tip of the heat gun, and slowly twirl it as the crayon shavings melt. You can add more shavings if you'd like to coat the inside further, or you can dump out the excess shavings when you're done.
Replace the top of your ornament once the inside is completed coated and speckled.
Next, cut your ribbon and tie it to the top of the ornament. The color combinations for this project are limitless, so have fun when choosing your ribbon color!
Your handmade ornament is now complete and can be wrapped up as a holiday gift, or placed on your tree next to the other decorations! As an optional step, you can use sharpie to write a special message on the surface of the ornament. This quick and easy project would be perfect to do with your children this holiday season, and will be sure to bring a smile to the recipients face if given as a gift! Have fun and happy holidays!
