After the long and muddy Minnesota winter my mud room rug needed a good cleaning. Here is the before photo.
My basic rug care usually consists of me taking it out into the driveway and scrubing it with soap and a brush. Then I rinse it off with a hose and let it dry in the sun. This works great in the summer, however it is currently March and the rug was looking really dirty. This is when I had a light bulb moment; why not try using the SteamMachine with the large brush floor attachment. Here are my steps for cleaning an area rug in less than 10 minutes.
Step 1: I vacuumed the rug really well. Sometimes I will shake it outside, but since it was 20 degrees I just vacuumed it.
Step 2: At first I tried using just the SteamMachine, but the really stuck in dirt wasn't budging. This is when I thought about using Oxi Clean, it works so well for my kid's clothes in the laundry. I quickly ran up to the laundry room and grabbed it, then sprayed it on pretty much all the light areas of the rug. I let it sit for about a minute.
Step 3: I used the SteamMachine again to steam all areas of the rug. I went over each section 3 times.
I thought I snapped a picture of how gross the microfiber cloth was after going over the rug. However you get the idea that it was pretty dirty and it lifted out a lot of dirt.
Final step: After I finished steaming I ran the vacuum over the area rug one more time to pick up all the dirt that had been lifted out by the SteamMachine. I'm amazed at how clean the rug looked. It is hard to see in pictures but it is truly amazing. The best part is that it took me under 10 minutes. One other thing I should mention is that I rotated the rug so that it will wear evenly. So the part that was by the door is now up against the wall in the mud room. I rotate them each time I clean them which is usually about every couple months. This is what worked for my area rug, please test a small area before trying this at home. Also consult the rug care instructions.
