Project Steps

It is officially September and kids are back to school and so that means some homes are a little bit quieter. My oldest just started Kindergarten last week and it was very strange to be home all day with only my younger daughter. It was nice to have the alone time but it did seem too quiet at times. She is loving Kindergarten and I'm loving my one on one time with my youngest.

For the past few months, I have been decluttering and cleaning room by room. I have wanted to clean my duvet and bed for quite some time so I finally decided this weekend was it! I had no idea how easy and quick it would be!

Step 1

Remove the Bedding

I started by removing all of the sheets and covers on the bed. I wanted to start by steaming the mattress itself. Steam cleaning is a great way to use the power of high heated steam to kill dust mites, bacteria, germs, and viruses. After you read this article by Good Housekeeping I have a feeling you will run to go clean your bed!

Step 2

I used the Fabric Steamer attachment with my SteamMachine. You will wait until your SteamMachine heats up and then steam away. I ran over the entire mattress including the sides.

Step 3

After I was finished with the mattress, I steam cleaned our headboard. I never in my life thought about cleaning a headboard, but recently realized how important it is.

You don't sleep on top of the headboard of course, but you sleep right next to it. You want that clear of all those allergens, especially since it's so close to your head.

Step 4

Don't forget to clean your pillows! This works for your decorative pillows as well! Our decorative pillows aren't on the bed while we sleep, but they still spend a good amount of time on your bed.

Step 5

The best part about steam cleaning is that it also gets the wrinkles out of your pillows and duvets/comforters!

Step 6

Mattress Pad

After I cleaned the mattress, headboard, and pillows I put the mattress pad back on the bed. I wanted to steam clean this because I have a waterproof pad. I have little kids so you never know what might happen! :) In the past, I have washed and dried them, which in turn ruined them. I love that I can now clean it without it getting ruined!

Step 7

Duvet Cover

The last piece I cleaned was our duvet cover. I got an adorable white duvet from Wayfair that has poms lined around the entire duvet. I didn't think about how that would make it hard to wash with the poms.

One day I was eating in bed. When I was finished I set it on the other side of the bed with food still on it. Didn't think much of it. Then my daughter comes into the room and climbs into bed and proceeds to put the covers over herself.....and the remains of my portabella pizza.

Hence the beautiful stain on my white duvet. I know, I had it coming by having a white duvet with small children in my home!

Step 8

Scrub Away Stains

Thanks to the SteamMachine and a little scrubbing with a microfiber cloth the stain is gone! I was soooo excited about this!

Step 9

Enjoy a Clean Bed!

I'm really looking forward to sinking into my bed tonight knowing that it's clean. This is definitely something I will be adding to my cleaning list on a more regular basis. It took me about 20 minutes to clean my entire bed!

Thanks so much for hanging out with me today. I hope you all have a great week and don't forget to head on over to Refashionably Late for all things home decor and DIY!
