Intro

Do you have a dog that has been having accidents--maybe a new puppy or an older dog that is having incontinence issues? Or maybe you bought a home where the previous owners had pets that left urine smells or stains in the carpet? Before you invest hundreds (or thousands) of dollars going to drastic measures to clean the smell, try these simple steps to cleaning up the urine smell in your home.

If you have a cat, here are tips for removing cat urine smell too!

Step 1

If you have a pet that is actively having accidents in your house, start by getting to the accident quickly and dabbing up the urine with paper towel immediately. Continue with clean paper towel until the spot is dry.

Step 2

Next, pour some white vinegar into a spray bottle and thoroughly saturate the area. After that, sprinkle baking soda over the top and let dry.

Step 3

Once the baking soda has dried, vacuum the baking soda up and see if the smell remains. If so, you may want to repeat the process again to see if it comes out more.

Step 4

Once you've vacuumed up the baking soda and are satisfied with the results, I like to take my HomeRight SteamMachine Elite steam cleaner and attachments and go over the carpet well to disinfect it and kill any remaining germs. The steam helps kill 99% of the germs leaving your carpet fresh and clean!
