How to Steam Linens with the HomeRight SteamMachine Elite
Written & Photographed by Skaie Knox, HomeJelly
I must admit that I’m not a super gadgety type gal. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good power tool and my computer is slowly becoming one of my best friends. Still, when HomeRight approached me to write about their newest home goods product, the SteamMachine Elite, I was a bit dubious as to why I should create space in my garage to house it.
Not for long, though.
One very important heirloom I was left to care for, given to me by my Aunt Mim, is a Swedish tablecloth. Its simple white on white, rosemaling damask design makes it a practical and beautiful linen that’s easily styled for most any type of special occasion.
But, often with valuable family things, comes the responsibility of maintaining them. Thanks to this multi-purpose steam machine, and a few cleaning linens tips and tricks, I’m able to keep my aunt’s and others’ crisp, clean and pristine!
Why use the SteamMachine Elite on linens?
1. After washing, it’s the perfect way to steam away the wrinkles, chemical-free and with less risk of burning or scorching delicate fabrics.
2. Before use, steaming can not only fresh’n up the potential “closet smell” of your linen, it can rid of any wrinkles formed or dust smudges while being stored away. (Scroll down for an essential oils trick while steaming.)
How to steam linens with the SteamMachine Elite?
1. Prepare your steam machine.
Unscrew safety cap, then fill using up to 40 oz. of water. NOTE: use ONLY distilled water to avoid mineral build-up and potentially shortening the life of your machine. Replace safety cap, then attach the straight adapter and fabric steamer (remove the squeegee). Plug in, then press the “on” button. The red and orange indicator lights will both light up. Wait approximately 8 minutes until the orange light turns OFF. You’re ready to steam!
2. Add 8-10 drops of essential oil onto fabric steamer bonnet.
Place over the fabric steamer attachment, then add your drops. I used lavender essential oil. This is a perfect step when preparing your linens for use. It will give it a light scent of lavender or any type you choose. NOTE: Do NOT place oil inside steam machine.
3. Hang your linen to steam.
If you have a laundry line, you can hang your linen over once, making sure it doesn’t drag on the ground. If you don’t, use your ironing board, raising it to its tallest point, then drape over your linen as best you can. Note: you might need to fold it once, but that’s okay. You can flip over your linen and steam the other side as you go.
4. Steam your linen.
When steam only emerges from your fabric steamer head, begin moving it over your linen. What’s FABulous about the SteamMachine Elite is there is no need to offload any water beforehand...steam emerges immediately!
You’ll quickly see any wrinkles fade away and the essential oils will add a lovely scent as well. Continue steaming your entire piece, then place onto your table to be set.
You did it!
Extra Tip! It took me a moment to figure out how to open the accessories storage compartment. When I did, I realized it was very simple. Simply push in and lift up the lid!
