Intro

I’m not quite sure what it is about the air this time of year. Maybe it’s the scent of blooming azaleas or the extra warmth of sunshine as the days grow longer, but it sure seems like a time to refresh our homes.

Those of you in the middle and eastern part of the country might be thinking, “Really? This is the first week I haven’t had to scrape the snow off my windows. I’m not quite ready to tackle my whole house!”

Worry not! With the help of today’s post and a good ol’ egg timer, you’ll be able to spring into cleaning one room at a time in no time! Spring Cleaning Tip! To get yourself into the seasonal spring-cleaning mood, grab yourself an egg timer and set it for 15 minutes. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in that amount of time.

Next, choose just one room at a time. Better yet, focus on the trouble areas that get most cluttered. Here’s my suggested spring-cleaning room list below. Give it a try! Soon your home will be freshened up and smelling like spring flowers.

Step 1

Bedroom: Closet

Ugh. After months of kick’n off boots, hauling on heavy sweaters and jackets, and slinging about knitted scarves, our closets have taken quite a winter beating. With the help of just a few items like baskets to store our warm-weather clothes, extra shelving to utilize wasted space, and a DIY’d crate shoe cubby, you’ll be organized like a boss in no time. Kids can join in on this fun, too - parents can make a contest out of the “Best Organized Closet” with awards such as movie tickets, video game points, ice cream coupon, etc. Spring Cleaning TIP! Crates are super inexpensive and a good-looking option for added shoe, hat, scarf, or toy storage. I bought mine at Michael’s for $10. With their usual 40% off coupon, that’s a good buy!

Step 2

Bathroom: Shelves, Drawers ’n Cabinets

The one major clutter category in my bathroom? Hotel soaps, shampoos and conditioners. (Ugh, again.) My husband has gotten into the delightful habit of squirreling away these tiny toiletries that fit perfectly into his dopp kit. The problem is, they’re often forgotten in the depths and shadows of our bathroom drawers and cabinets. Spring Cleaning Tip! Wind up that timer to 15 minutes and grab any excess toiletries, samples or products that you haven’t used in the past three months. Place them in a ziplock bag, label then date and store them away. If no one uses them in the next three months, toss ‘em! Extra Spring Cleaning Tip! Once you’ve cleaned out your shelves, drawers ’n cabinets, give your bathroom floors some love with the HomeRight SteamMachine Model 52. With its upright handle, you’ll save your back and end up with a deep-cleaned surface for a happier and healthier spring season.

Step 3

Kitchen:  Junk ’n Silverware Drawers

There’s a phenomenon in kitchens all around America: the junk drawer! It’s where we keep our kitchen do-dads and gadgets available at the ready whenever the receipt calls for them. But are they ready? When they’re just thrown into a drawer willy-nilly, it can take precious poaching and sautéing time to find that garlic grater or mini spatula. Take this time to edit your kitchen tools, too. Seriously, when was the last time you used that butter curler?

Spring Cleaning Tip! Edit, then get yourself an organizer and you’ll never burn another demi glace again!

Cutlery Tray

This goes for silverware as well. My mom lives alone and hers looks like she could host a cafeteria-sized crowd. Less is more, when it comes to cutlery, and in 15 minutes, yours will be orderly and gleefully uncrowded.

Kitchen Dinner and serving ware

Spring Cleaning Tip! Once you’ve downsized your silverware, go ahead and give it a good scrub. If it’s been a while, update yours with a mesh or one like this bamboo tray. It’s super easy to clean and friendly to our environment!

Step 4

Office: Desk ’n Filing Cabinet

Now, more than ever, will you want that timer. Keeping office clutter to a minimum is like trying to build a sandcastle during high tide: it’s relentless and can make a frustrating mess.

Since tax time is coming, (yay.) why not get a jump on it by pulling and sorting your bill statements and usual documents needed to file?

Spring Cleaning Tip! Once your files have been lightened, be sure to keep them well-labelled by using a label maker. This will help you easily and quickly identify where you’ll need to keep documents and/or add/rename new ones.

Step 5

When it comes to remotes and video game equipment, we’ve entered the age of perpetual paraphernalia. Kids, and “kids of all ages”, are now required to update, update and update every year or so to keep up with the latest and greatest version of Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, etc.

The result? We’re left with television/gaming cabinets cluttered with cables, controllers and other accessories.

Spring Cleaning Tip! This is audience participation time! Ask your kid(s) (including the adult ones) to play a new game: “15 Minutes of Game Stuff Mania!” They’ll most likely know what they need to keep and what they can throw out for good.

The good news? With this spring cleaning game…everybody wins!
