Project Steps

Intro

When I recently swapped out the curtains for gray linen drapes at my back door, I noticed how wrinkly and creased they had become from being jammed in the linen closet. I also noticed they had that “closed-up closet scent” from being stored for over half a year.

Luckily for me, the HomeRight SteamMachine Elite was the perfect tool to easily, and quickly give them a wrinkle-free look, and freshen them up at the same time. The nice thing about the SteamMachine Elite, is that is comes with a fabric/garment steamer attachment, so I don’t need a separate machine to steam and/or sanitize. I simply used the steamer attachment with the terry cloth bonnet to do both.

Step 1

Before starting, always read proper operating and safety instructions for the HomeRight Steam Machine Elite. Make sure the fabric is compatible with steaming, and will not be damaged by the moisture. Doing a test area is always recommended in an inconspicuous spot first.

Step 2

Hang the window treatment, making sure it hangs straight (Tip: If they are new curtains or drapery, and you might need to hem them. Hanging and steaming them beforehand is a great way to make sure they are at their full length before removing any excess fabric so they don’t wind up too short.)

Step 3

Let the steam cleaner come to temperature. When the SteamMachine Elite is ready, lightly press the bonnet-covered steamer head to the fabric, and release the steam onto the curtain with the trigger. Never stand under the steam head, and keep body and hands out of the steam area when using the machine.

Step 4

Working small sections at a time, start at the top, and move the steam head in a steady, downward direction to the bottom of the curtain keeping the steamer against the fabric. Move slowly, letting the steam do the work until the wrinkles are removed.

Step 5

Once the entire curtain/drape is steamed, let the window treatment hang straight until completely dry. Now you have wrinkle-free drapes and curtains!
